Ablative Fractional Resurfacing (AFR)

With AFR, the laser energy is distributed in a pixelated or grid pattern, vaporizing tiny columns of skin while leaving the skin between these columns (or “holes”) uninjured. The skin immediately contracts around these holes, providing immediate tightening. The heat injury from creating the hole triggers new collagen production which continues for 6-12 weeks after the laser procedure. Because the majority of the surface skin is unaffected by the laser, healing is rapid and it is safe and effective for all areas including the neck and chest. Dark skin types can be safely treated (for example: acne scarring) with minimal risk of pigmentation problems.

After the treatment, you will feel as if you received a mild sunburn. There will be redness, swelling and oozing for a short time (1-2 days). Crusting resolves in 4 -5 days with full healing at one week. Minor redness may take 2 -3 weeks to resolve. Minimizing sun exposure and using sunscreen daily will improve your results. You will see an immediate improvement, and your skin will continue to improve for several months. The results are long-lasting but it will not stop normal aging process.

Am I a good candidate?

If you have elastotic (sun-damaged) skin that is not prone to scarring and are healthy you are a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing.
